Airport security checkpoints have long been a source of stress for traveling families. Between managing carry-on bags and keeping track of children, the screening process can feel overwhelming for parents and caregivers. Recognizing these unique challenges, the Transportation Security Administration has launched a new initiative designed to make air travel more family-friendly. The “Families on the Fly” campaign is the latest TSA initiative designed to enhance hospitality for families during the airport security screening experience, announced by the Department of Homeland Security in July 2025. This program represents a significant shift toward accommodating the specific needs of families traveling with children, addressing pain points that have frustrated parents for years..The program offers several practical advantages that address common family travel challenges:
Dedicated Family Lanes: Dedicated family lanes at select airports nationwide provide families with specialized screening areas designed to accommodate the extra time and space often needed when traveling with children. These lanes recognize that families may need additional assistance with strollers, car seats, and multiple bags while managing young travelers.
Discounted TSA PreCheck Fees: Perhaps most significantly for budget-conscious families, the program will soon offer discounted TSA PreCheck® fees for families. TSA PreCheck typically costs $78 for a five-year membership, so reduced rates could make expedited screening more accessible to families who travel regularly.
Military Family Support: The initiative includes dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes for service members and their families, building on existing programs that recognize military service. This benefit recognizes the unique circumstances of military families, who often relocate frequently and may need to travel on short notice.
The rollout is beginning at select airports before expanding nationwide. Current participating airports include: Orlando International (MCO) and Charlotte-Douglas International (CLT), two major hubs that see significant family travel traffic.
Expansion plans are already in motion, with planned expansions coming to John Wayne Orange County Airport (SNA) and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu. Additional airports joining the program include Charleston International Airport (CHS), Jacksonville International (JAX), Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport (PVD), Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), and Tampa International Airport (TPA).
The selection of these airports appears strategic, targeting destinations popular with families and military communities. Orlando, for instance, is a gateway to major theme parks, while military-adjacent airports like Jacksonville serve significant service member populations.
“Families on the Fly” represents just one component of TSA’s broader effort to improve the passenger experience. This initiative is one of several TSA has launched to improve hospitality at its 435 airports located throughout the country.
