Area 51, situated in the remote Nevada desert, is a military base that is shrouded in secrecy and speculated over by conspiracy theorists. A US Air Force testing ground, the facility is known to develop cutting-edge aircraft. It has, however, been its association with extraterrestrials that has really captured the public imagination, and stories of government cover-ups are rife.
For several decades, it has been rumored that the spaceship which allegedly crashed-landed in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947 is housed at the base, along with the bodies of the aliens who piloted the spaceship. Additionally, numerous people claim that UFOs have been spotted in the clear skies over the vast Nevada desert.
Whatever goes on at the base, it’s highly classified. Area 51 may not be your usual tourist destination, but for those who are intrigued by the possibility of the existence of aliens or those who are simply open-minded and curious, Area 51 holds a certain allure.
I recently took the 2.5-hour trip from Las Vegas to Area 51 and found it to be a captivating and offbeat experience. Even if you aren’t lucky enough to spot any little green men, it makes for a very scenic road trip thanks to the sublime desert landscapes that you pass through. There are also several interesting roadside attractions that are worth pulling over for. Whether you have a specific interest in life beyond Earth or just prefer your adventures to be a little out of the ordinary, a road trip to Area 51 is an adventure with a difference. Book a tour from Las Vegas, or fill up the tank and head down the Extraterrestrial Highway, one of the most mysterious roads in the USA.
The Extraterrestrial Highway Sign
This is where the Extraterrestrial Highway (also known as the rather more mundane Route 375) starts. Don’t miss the opportunity to stop and snap a selfie in front of the iconic sign. It’s a favorite spot for those embarking on their journey along the desolate highway, but sadly, the sign has to be replaced frequently due to vandalism and theft.
Alien Research Center, Hiko
You can’t miss this striking sight as you drive through the desert – a gigantic aluminium alien known as Fred standing in front of a stark metal building. More of a gift shop than a research center, the interior is crammed with alien and UFO related merchandise. From alien Tequila to postcards and t-shirts, it’s a treasure trove of temptations for extraterrestrial aficionados and a one-stop shop for those who want to take home a souvenir of their road trip.
Joshua Tree Forest
The twisted branches and spiny trunks of Joshua trees line a stretch of the long, lonesome highway. Surrounded by open range cattle ranches, the trees, which are native to the Mojave Desert, are a spectacular sight. Very few cars pass in this direction, and it’s worth making a stop to take in the peace and immerse yourself in the beauty of the area. There are several trails in the vicinity for those who want to spend longer exploring the mesmerizing landscapes. The absence of lights at night means that the desert is a perfect place for stargazing.
Little A ‘Le’ Inn, Rachel
Little A’Le’ Inn is a quirky restaurant/motel situated in Rachel, the nearest town to Area 51. Pretty much in the middle of nowhere, with a population of no more than a handful of people, it’s a popular stop for tourists. With a greeting sign proclaiming ‘Welcome Earthlings’, there are several fun art installations in the grounds of the property. Inside, the walls are adorned with alien images, and a small shop sells a variety of souvenirs. If you have a chance, have a chat with the locals who are only too happy to share with you their experiences of UFO sightings. Before getting back on the highway towards Area 51, indulge in a tasty Alien Burger (which I can highly recommend) accompanied by a cold beer.
Area 51
At the end of a dirt road, about 12 miles from Rachel, the foreboding gate of Area 51 comes into view. Although guards aren’t visible, you know that you are being watched and listened to by the microphones, surveillance cameras, and security sensors that are positioned around the gate. Apparently, if anyone ventures too close, a siren sounds to warn off those who dare to try their luck. When we were at the gate, a white SUV was denied access until we had cleared the area, and it was evident that we wouldn’t attempt to sneak in. It may simply appear to be a heavily patrolled gate in the middle of the desert, but it can’t be denied that there’s a sense of mystery in the air. Very few people know what goes on behind the gate, but it’s an intriguing place that will continue to entice inquisitive tourists and UFO enthusiasts alike.
